Hesed is one of the centers I will be working in. The center focuses on helping the elderly Jewish community in Kiev and the surrounding area. These centers exist in other parts of Urkaine as well. So far I have not done much work but have been learning about the center and its programs. Below is a list of some of the programs (I will add more with time):
1. Medical program - provides medical rehabilitation equipment, help for the visually and hearing impaired, distribute medicine, and on site medical help.
2. Day Center - most of these clients have low mobility and can't go out as much. Therefore, this opportunity allows them to socialize, attend lectures and perform errands that they would not be able to do on their own. The center has a library, hairdresser, a doctor, and many other services.
3. Food Program - this program varies depending on the client's needs. Some people receive food packages, some receive meals at home, and others receive cards for supermarkets.
4.MOKED - this is a repairing services. Such as shoe repair, laundry services, electrical repair and many other services. This program has a coordinator and all the repairs, and services are run by volunteers.
5. Club - provides social activities for the elderly in the center. For those clients who can't come to the center attend warm homes. These visits are run by host volunteers; they meet at someone's home to have tea and sweets. This allows the elderly to socialize and stay active.
